A comforting and flavorful Crockpot French Onion Soup that is perfect for chilly days.
Ingredients

- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 8 slices of French bread
- 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- In a skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper; cook until onions are caramelized.
- Transfer the caramelized onions to the crockpot.
- Add beef broth, white wine, thyme, and bay leaf to the crockpot.
- Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.
- Before serving, toast the French bread slices.
- Serve the soup in bowls, top with toasted bread and shredded cheese.
- Broil in the oven until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of beef broth.
- Feel free to adjust the amount of cheese to your liking.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
