Description
A classic patty melt is a delicious sandwich made with a juicy beef patty, melted cheese, and caramelized onions, all grilled between two slices of bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 4 slices of rye bread
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Cook until caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
- While the onions are cooking, form the ground beef into two patties and season with salt and pepper.
- In another skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until cooked to your desired doneness.
- Once the patties are cooked, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover until the cheese is melted.
- In the same skillet used for the onions, add the remaining butter and place two slices of rye bread in the skillet.
- Top each slice of bread with a patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of bread to form a sandwich.
- Grill the sandwiches until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve hot.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a dash of Worcestershire sauce to the beef before cooking.
- Feel free to use other types of cheese, such as cheddar or American.
- Serve with pickles or a side of fries for a complete meal.
