Description

A classic patty melt is a delicious sandwich made with a juicy beef patty, melted cheese, and caramelized onions, all grilled between two slices of bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 4 slices of rye bread
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Cook until caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  2. While the onions are cooking, form the ground beef into two patties and season with salt and pepper.
  3. In another skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until cooked to your desired doneness.
  4. Once the patties are cooked, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover until the cheese is melted.
  5. In the same skillet used for the onions, add the remaining butter and place two slices of rye bread in the skillet.
  6. Top each slice of bread with a patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of bread to form a sandwich.
  7. Grill the sandwiches until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  8. Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a dash of Worcestershire sauce to the beef before cooking.
  • Feel free to use other types of cheese, such as cheddar or American.
  • Serve with pickles or a side of fries for a complete meal.
